Sarah French

Sarah is a consultant, academic and practitioner with over 20 years of international experience. She has worked  on a variety of sustainability issues in the fields of international development, sustainable livelihoods, ecotourism, biodiversity, conservation, trade and business. This has given her a wide range of experience from practice to policy at the local, regional and international level. Her Geneva-based work involves facilitating people-centred sustainable development projects, involving partnerships to develop the skills, attitudes and knowledge of individuals and institutions through education and training, research and programme management.

Sarah  has partnered with public, private and not-for-profit organisations including Countdown 2010, DFID, DGEF, FAO, GAVI, GEI, the Governments of Costa Rica and the Netherlands, ICTSD, IFC, ILO, IUCN, PROFOR, PROFOREST, the Stockholm Convention, UNEP, UNV, UNITAR, the World Bank and others. She has extensive experience working worldwide and has lived and worked in Latin America and several European countries.

Previous experience includes:

• in Geneva, working as an advisor for the International Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD) on monitoring, evaluation and oversight: Establishing a systematic, disciplined approach to planning, monitoring and evaluation (PM&E) and improvement of the effectiveness of results orientation and performance management, and the impact of ICTSD’s activities on its intended beneficiaries.

• in the UK, Centre for International Development and Training, Wolverhampton University  as an associate senior lecturer and Consultant, lecturing on Masters programmes and on the CHEVENING Fellowship Courses. Consultancies included serving as the International Coordinator for Cameroon (French speaking) for the Poverty- Forestry Toolkit in collaboration with ODI and IIED  under funding from PROFOR World Bank. And working as the FAO RAF advisor for the development of the Strategic Framework and Medium term Plan (French and English) establishing the new IPA FAO planning model.

• in the UK Chester, working at Chester University as senior lecturer in geography and international development studies and founder  and co-director ‘Global Perspective’-  an initiative in environmental education,  development awareness, and advocacy for young people. Establishing grass roots programmes with overseas partners in fields of natural resources and participatory development in Kenya, Bangladesh, Peru, Costa Rica and Honduras: overseas partners include Christian Aid, TearFund, MOPAWI and others.

• in Cajamarca in the rural Andes, Peru, working for PROESA- an Integrated development project in education, health and agriculture  as a programme manager for natural resources management & water quality testing

• in Oruro, Bolivia, working as a coordinator of field placements for 80 youth participants for community- based experiential  placements and electives in hospitals.

Sarah has an MSc in Environment and Development Education from South Bank University of London, PGCE in Environmental Science Education from Garnett College, Greenwich University, London and a BSc Hons Geography and Natural Science from Kent University.
