Natural England

Things are pretty hectic here as we prepare for the creation of the new agency Natural England that will merge English Nature with the RDS and the Countryside, recreation and Access Division of the Countryside Agency.  I attached a copy of the draft statement of strategic direction for the new agency by way of background. You will see that we will continue to have a keen interest in England's seas and coasts, and fisheries policy will remain a priority. (James Marsden)

Seafood Choices Alliance

Seafood Choices Alliance informs, connects and mobilizes the nation’s leading voices in support of a sustainable supply of seafood choices. As an association that unites the leading voices from the seafood industry, Seafood Choices Alliance enables its members to advance actions that reflect their shared concern for the long term supply of seafood and the long term health of the ocean environment.

... If we decide to include a component on consumption, it would be worthwhile to review more thoroughly the programme of the US-focused alliance

... an excellent resource should we decide to build a travelling exhibition ... contains a wealth of information, such as layouts ...

European Environment Agency

has a website dedicated to the fishing issue:

There is a critical overcapacity in the European fishing fleet. Over-fishing can have serious consequences for the entire marine environment.  ... The key question is whether Europe can avoid ‘fishing out’ its remaining stocks and instead develop an industry that is sustainable for both the environment and those making a living from it. This section looks at the reform of the EU’s Common Fisheries Policy, which is designed to make that happen, and presents studies of fish stocks, fishing fleet activity, and potential alternatives, such as fish farming.

2. Raise awareness of, and generate action to halt, the depletion of the oceans through unsustainable fishing: the fisheries crisis. (achieved)

The objectives of the Stop Overfishing website were:

  • Raise public awareness about the ocean crisis and the opportunity/solutions offered by a reformed CFP. (achieved)
