6. Identification of potential overlaps/gaps/inconsistencies The sustainable use module presented a similar challenge at the regional level as it did at the global level. It is at times difficult to distinguish between actions related to sustainable use and the actions related to the prevention of unsustainable trade. Much of the CITES-related agreements focus more on regulating trade that is not sustainable than on promoting or managing use/trade which is sustainable. Also, with respect to sustainable use, the regional inputs focused mostly on biodiversity use though uses of non-biodiversity resources such as water may also need to be considered. Regarding gaps, it will be most useful to complete the glossary of terms for both the global treaties and the regional treaties as a common vocabulary is often critical to understanding the issues and what is to be done about them. Such a glossary will also be useful in the development of additional modules. |
