Uganda cattle

While on mission in Uganda to undertake the SLM PER, a trip to south-western Uganda was organised to discuss the challenges and opportunities of managing landscapes sustainably at the district level and to explore the linkages between productive landscapes and protected areas.

At the time, there were several serious incursions of cattle keepers into the Queen Elizabeth National Park.

The desire of cattle keepers to access the grasslands of the park and the tensions this created among the local communities highlighted the need for developing sustainability strategies and policies for managing landscapes. Such strategies need to include all landscape users including cattle keepers, protected area authorities, tourism companies, farmers, foresters, fishers and so on.
